Takeaways from FitBloggin'

My story is a little different from others' I've read.  This was my first conference as an attendee but not from working all or part of one.  I've volunteered for various large scale events like the 2001 World Police and Fire Games as the Language Services Coordinator (that was a disaster and chaos rolled up in one for me on top of being pregnant).  For my event management certificate I helped to organize and run the 2005 P.L.A.N.T.S. conference for the Indiana Nursery and Landscape Association.

I started out Thursday night literally dragging Benny to the Registration & Reception at Scotty's Brewhouse.  He was such a Grumpy Gus about the whole situation we only stayed an hour.  The room we were in was a little small for the crowd but since people were coming and going it worked out OK.

Friday

Friday and Saturday morning I got up at my normal weekday time (6 AM) to get dressed and finish stuffing my bag to last me the whole day.  I ordered an Uber, but apparently selected the wrong one as a huge SUV came to pick me up Friday.  Oh well, it's was cheaper and less of a hassle than parking downtown!

Although I often have yogurt as my breakfast I was surprised to find that was the only option.  Those doing the workouts need WAY more protein and good carbs than that would offer.  Because of that I was glad that I opted out of doing the workouts on Friday.  (I'd switched my current Thursday rest day with Friday to allow me to chill.)

First up was the workout with Valerie Waters and her Valslides (writing that makes me think of Jem and the Holograms for some reason LOL).  I'd never watched an entire workout before but that hour went by fast!  I think having something like the Valsides would make it much easier to do exercises like mountain climbers (which I suck at).

Lisa said that we as a wellness community need to defy the stereotypes of what it means to be fit. As an example you see a plus size instructor is leading a workout do you bail questioning what you could possibly learn from someone so big? You just missed the chance to gain knowledge and experience from someone who lost half their weight or more. She has had an incredible journey and is stronger and healthier than ever; she just can't wait to help everyone she comes in contact with!

Like myself Lisa also recommends piecing different strategies together to find your path. There is no one size fits all method to healthy living. It's trial and error until you find what works for your body, and even then there will be further tweaks along the way.

Some other takeaways from Lisa
  • It's never too late to change.
  • Think about what's happening along the way, how to get there, and enjoy the journey.
  • It's our goal to move our audiences to improve their lives.
  • You can't inspire others unless you're inspired.

The panel of Dawn, Martinus, and Tyler discussed different ways for our messages to be powerful, tailored to our audiences, and motivating. No matter what we're talking about we must remain authentic to our selves.  In doing this it ensures the message we're writing about is consistent with our personal lives.

Some other takeaways from the panel:
  • Sharing your story, not leaving out the struggles, makes you more human to your audience.
  • Always have a clear call to action and a goal for how you want your audience to feel or respond to your message. (Martinus wants people to cry!) Never forget the way you make them feel.
  • You must understand your audience and their level of knowledge on the topic.
  • Living a healthy lifestyle is a "you change"; you must value yourself to make the change.

Sworkit is an app that you can customize your workout. (There's a free and a paid version as well as one for kids.)  You select what type of workout you want to do and how long you have to do it.  BOOM, now you have a workout no matter where you are!  This app is one that gives you a heads up of the next exercise so you can see whether or not it's something you can do at this stage of your journey.  I like these types of advance notices.

My plan was to head down to Food Truck Friday afterwards (since I've never gone) but after I stopped at the ATM I decided to grab Qdoba to go.  On the way there I got myself turned around (since I'm used to approaching the area from the east side instead of the west).  It was good to get some quiet solitude over lunch.

I took so many notes from Dr. Pamela that I could probably have her talk as a post unto itself! There are physiological, emotional, and mental factors contributing to the baggage we all carry. The top physiological factors are insulin and leptin resistance, adrenal insufficiency, excess toxicity, imbalanced reproductive hormones, malabsorption and/or food allergies, and under treated or untreated thyroid imbalances.

Emotional baggage effects all aspects of life because emotions are carried by all cells. Nobody is 100% together! Isn't that great to hear?

Emotional wounds live in the unconscious mind. The subconscious remembers everything at a cellular level. It's goal is to protect us.

There are several indicators that emotional baggage is preventing you from progressing in your journey. Examples include:

  • Bad habits that you can't get rid of
  • Doing what's right but not seeing progress
  • Destroying your own success so others stop celebrating with you
  • Believe you'll reach your goals but it won't last
  • Lose and regain weight repeatedly
  • Recognizing your tendency to destroy the good in your life but don't know how to change
There are also barriers we put up blocking success.
  • Not identifying your WHY for this journey
  • Setting unrealistic goals
  • No reward system for when you reach your goals
  • No true plan for your path
  • The belief that the goal is the end
  • The belief that positive changes don't last
Dr. Pamela also noted that impersonal why's weren't really good. You need to go deeper than just because the doctor so. Yes, it'll get him off your back but what does reaching your goal REALLY mean to you?

It stunk that Southwest prevented Elizabeth from making it to Indy but we still made the most of it!  The Zephyr crew set up a Skype call so that she could still speak with us.  Elizabeth did a great job even though she couldn't see us!

Did you sign up for your social media accounts without reading the terms and conditions - your contract with the network? I know I do; it's just too much to go through! There's probably so much stuff I'm doing wrong or missing out on but I can't bring myself to read them.

Everything we create is copyrighted. How it can be used by the other party is spelled out in the contract.

  • Right to make copies, sell copies, or sell all rights to the creation.
  • Right to make derivatives of the work - i.e. tweeting highlights
  • Right to public performance of the art
If you are under a work for hire contract YOU DO NOT OWN WHAT YOU CREATE! Everything produced belongs to the other party. I'm not sure how this would be a beneficial contract to entertain.

At the evening reception I tried two of Oliver Winery's Orchard Stand wines - mango and strawberry.  Now, I don't care for beer (it's too sour) and wine is just MEH but these two had great flavor!  I enjoyed mango a bit more than the strawberry.  Now to convince Benny to get this instead of champagne for NYE!

Once the day was over Benny and Austin picked me up a few blocks away and we headed home for a quiet evening (I still cooked dinner).

I'd tried the Jaybird Reign activity band we got but it ceased functioning. They sent me another one but it too died. Austin told me he wanted new earbuds so I agreed to swap the band for a pair. I'm currently awaiting the exchange instructions.

 Saturday

I woke up not feeling too well but took some meds and pulled up my big girl panties to make it through the day.

The Saturday morning session with Life Time Fitness was my only workout of the weekend.  They really had us kicking and punching up a storm the first half!  I kept having to run back for some water.  The second half was strength training, partly with the resistance band above.  This band made things uber tough!

These discussions were pretty similar. David and Angela did great jobs leading the groups!

Some takeaways:
  • We aren't broken, our environment is.
  • We were designed for feast or famine. There's an overabundance of food so as a society we feast too much.
  • When you find yourself talking down about you put a loved one in front of your mind. Ask yourself if you'd say those things to your loved one.
A group of us headed over to Café Patachou for lunch. I'd never eaten there before. I almost panicked looking at the menu - all those egg dishes and I'm not a fan! In the end it was a toss up between the salmon bagel and the spinach salad. I ate the salad less strawberries.

This was my first time seeing Zumba, more than little clips. Margo and Nellie took turns leading the crowd through a fantastic set of moves. With my lack of coordination I'd probably would have been running into everyone!

Kristin has been through a lot but through adversity she has evolved into something bigger. During her talk she told us about how she got into a great working relationship with Deepak Chopra. I too wouldn't have believed that it was real.

Why ILLUMINATE?

  • Imagine success and ignite possibilities.
  • Let go of the things you can't control.
  • Liquidity - be flexible and don't be fixated on one idea.
  • Unbounded Potential - be in touch with your core being, your pure self.
  • Moment - be present, making yourself available for that golden opportunity.
  • Illuminate - become the light that attracts what you need.
  • Nurture - practice self care to avoid burnout.
  • Align - examine what success looks like and train you thoughts to stay aligned.
  • Transparency is the portal to abundance. Be truthful with yourself. What's restricting your truth? Allow yourself to be vulnerable.
  • Evolve - become a student of life. Just because someone is popular doesn't mean they'll impact you the most. We don't evolve because we're afraid to ask.
We can't be the change until we change ourselves!

Steve led a lively talk on adjusting your mindset to achieve your goals. By this time I was hoping the second dose of meds would kick in but it never happened. I think I may have missed a lot of what he had to say because of that.

Some takeaways:

  • Saying "I can't" gives away your power.
  • Major Manipulators - perfectionism, shame, guilt, anxiety, financial stress, jobs, fulfillment, grief, situational avoidance, pattern paralysis, body image, people pleasing, performance, low self-esteem, hormonal imbalance, poor guy health, fatigue
  • Small micro changes lead to lasting goals.
  • Be accountable for goal behaviors instead of outcomes.
  • Realize what you've done right on your journey instead of focusing on getting it ALL right.

FitBloggin' wrapped up with Brooke's session on being in check with our emotional health, focusing on the areas of contentment, good relationships, self appreciation, and stress management.

Contentment

  • Find satisfaction in the moment, accepting the way things are. Be present.
  • Practice mindfulness and awareness without judgement. Find a sense of balance.
  • Take responsibility for your emotions.
  • When you find yourself going negative, recognize it and redirect to something uplifting.
Good Relationships
  • You're the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. (I find this scary with all the drama at work!)
  • Reflect kindness.
  • Boundaries are essential.
  • You have to put in the work to make things work.
  • In communicating, mirror (summarize) what they say, validate that what is said makes sense (even if it only makes sense to them), empathize with them by guessing their emotions, and eliminate "but" and replace it with "and".
  • Best of all, have fun and laugh!
Self Appreciation
  • Support yourself and know who you are.
  • Know your strengths. Focus on them instead of your weaknesses.
  • Know your personality.
  • Know your thoughts.
  • Know your values.
Stress Management
  • Worrying is a waste of time and energy. QUIT IT!
  • Practice physical energy habits such as deep breathing, eating food for fuel, staying hydrated, exercising, and sleeping.
  • Practice emotional energy habits such as crying, smiling, having a support team, laughing, meditating, being mindful, adult coloring, scheduling priorities, and complete silence (think sensory deprivation chamber).

Did you notice any recurring themes between the speakers?

Where will FitBloggin' be next year? I'm hoping that they decide on another Midwestern city, maybe Columbus, Ohio. That way I can crash with family the weekend.

Live from FitBloggin'

As the days approached for FitBloggin' to begin I was getting more and more bummed out.  So many can no longer attend, either money, their jobs, or logistics (Southwest cancelled a bunch of flights) stopped these folks from making it to Indy.

Be sure to watch Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for instant gratification of what I'm experiencing. Not sure if I'm going to do a complete summary or break up posts since this is my first event of this nature.  I can't wait to tell you what all I learn!

Workouts

SATURDAY I spent an hour working my arms and abs.  Definitely glad that this one was on the schedule for a weekend!

MONDAY was leg day again.  No DOMS this time around.

TUESDAY I worked my chest.

WEDNESDAY I worked my back with all those rows again in the morning.  During lunch I walked ~3 miles downtown.  I picked up my first spaghetti squash at the farmer's market.  When I got home I found a giant zucchini in the garden and a few others that had started.

Both the walk and the garden left me dripping with sweat so I had to shower twice in one day.  First time EVER for that I think. LOL

YESTERDAY was supposed to be a rest day but since I'm at FitBloggin' today I worked my shoulders instead.  Definitely going to have to change up how I do this day.  Using 15 lb dumbbells wasn't enough for me to feel anything doing the farmer's walk.

I Passed!

MONDAY I started my version of BodyBuilding.com's Built by Science training plan. First up was leg day.... and I continued to feel the effects until yesterday.

TUESDAY was chest day. I'm going to have to use heavier weights next week as I could've done much more than the 4 sets.

WEDNESDAY morning was back day, which ended up being diffrows for different folks. I also need to go heavier next week for this one. Not sure what I'll do about the bands though. I used the blue from the top and the red from the bottom of the closet door.

In the afternoon I walked in the sweltering heat, picking up zucchini, blackberries, and honey roll ups at the farmer's market. I also returned to work very rank. Makes me wonder what I'm going to do at Fitbloggin' next weekend....

THURSDAY I took the day off to chill and take the Wellness Coach Specialty Certification exam. I don't know why but it was harder to remember the details for this compared to the Group Exercise Instructor exam I took back in March . I passed by 3% above the minimum which is a little embarrassing. I guess I'm more application than data when it comes to coaching?

YESTERDAY I worked my shoulders before a dead day at work. The phone hardly rang at all and was told that it was the same while I was out.

TODAY I'll be working my arms and abs.

Bob's Red Mill & SweatPink #SummerStrong Challenge

Monday the Instagram challenge begins.  As promised here are the daily prompts again.  Be sure to tag #SummerStrong #FuelYourAwesomeness #SweatPink @BobsRedMill and @FitApproach when you share your pics!

MONDAY:  What's your favorite sunny summer day workout?

TUESDAY:  What's your favorite squat variation?

WEDNESDAY:  What fuels you in the morning, getting you strong and ready to face the day?
THURSDAY:  Sometimes the summer heat means you need to adapt your workouts.  What kinds of changes do you make?
FRIDAY AT FITBLOGGIN':  What's your favorite exercise to work your arms?

Fitbloggin'

I'll be altering my workouts next week to accommodate Fitbloggin'. Thursday is a scheduled rest day in the program but I'll be doing Friday's shoulders instead.

Every time I look at the schedule for Fitbloggin' I change my mind what I want to do. As of this moment here is what I'm thinking. Thursday I'll bring Benny to the Registration and Evening Reception.

Friday's Plans

Arriving for breakfast would mean that I probably won't be able to participate in the early morning fitness session. If I did I'd be too nauseous and end up being miserable. So I'll eat and play photographer for this round. The 11am workout is up in the air.

Since I'm attending Fitbloggin' not only for myself but for potential clients I'm going for more of the weight loss and management track. So the first breakout session at 2 will be "Ditching the Emotional Baggage That’s Keeping You Fat." The 3:15 session will be "Sign the Dotted Line - Contract Law for Bloggers."

What do I need to bring with me for the Reception and Expo?

Saturday's Plans

I'm thinking I'll grab breakfast but save it to eat after the workout. I'm still up in the air on the 9am small group discussions. Both sound like they'll contain valuable information. Perhaps I can tag team with another blogger and we can share details. I think I'll have to do the same thing for the 10:15 discussions of "Your Weight Loss Journey – The Highs and Lows" and "Fitness for the Minority Population."

I don't know if I want to try the Zumba session or not. All that shaking and rattling around makes me think headache afterwards. We'll see what happens.

For the 2pm breakout session I'll go to "I.L.L.U.M.I.N.A.T.E.- Ten Pillars For Overcoming Any Setback." At 3:15 it'll be "How to Train the Muscle Between Your Ears" but I'd like to know the details from the pitching and pricing session.

Sunday I'll join the fun walk.

So next weekend will be jam packed with activity for me but I don't know what I'll do with Benny and Austin. Neither is interested in this stuff.

    • Austin starting high school
  • August
    • Nothing YET
  • September
    • 37th Birthday

    • Austin's 15th Birthday
  • December
    • Holidays in Ohio

What's in store for you the rest of 2016?

Week in Review

SATURDAY I melted in my garden for about 2 hours. Staked the rest of the tomatoes. Created a structure for the zucchini to climb.

MONDAY I worked my back, chest, and shoulders with Kelly Coffey-Meyer's Muscle UP 2B Fit.

TUESDAY I worked my legs and arms. In the afternoon I purchased a subscription to Precision Nutrition's ProCoach. I will be using this both as the nutrition portion of my coaching programs as well as a standalone option.

WEDNESDAY I walked almost 3 miles during lunch. At the farmer's market I picked up blueberries, zucchini, and a fruit roll up.

YESTERDAY I had a busy mental day. I started with yoga before work.

I created the sign up page for a 30 day free trial of the Nutritional Guidelines. Those in the Brand New Me Healthy Living Community will have first dibs on the trial.

My Wellness Coach Certification exam is now scheduled for the 14th. I'm trying to decide if I'll work beforehand or take the whole day like the last time.  It'll probably depend upon the weather LOL

Dream It Real 2016

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Looking back at the goals I set for 2015 I feel that the only thing I accomplished was maintaining weight, and that was a struggle with all the health issues that decided to pop up over the year.

This year I've decided to try out Monica at The Yogi Movement's template for setting my 2016 goals.

Here are some highlights of things I accomplished this year:
  1. I maintained my goal weight by continuing as I have been.  I ate a little more, allowed a little more splurges, committed to at least one rest day a week, and switched the focus of my workouts more to strength training than cardio.
  2. I walked my first two 5Ks this year (weather prevented the 3rd).  I now have no problem walking this distance during my lunch break if there's nothing to pick up at the farmer's market.
  3. I had the hysteroscopy with polypectomy (my first surgery) with no issues or need for post-op medications.

What's not working?  What do I need to let go?

Here are a couple of things that are holding me back from living my dream:
  1. Too much time online and not getting ANY customers.  I had no sales whatsoever in Beachbody products this year.
  2. Not enough self-care. My nightly reading isn't enough. I need to get out in public and do more things like those TORC treatments Benny and I did.
  3. Not remembering my accomplishments.  You'd think this would be an easy task. For some reason I just can't recall much.

Where should I focus my goals for 2016?  Ranking the areas from 1-10 (1=worst, 10=best) on whether or not I'm happy where things are currently:

Physical Health     9

Mental Wellbeing     7

Environment     3

Finances     5

Family & Friends     3

Husband     3

Career/Purpose     5

Growth/Continuing Education     5

Pure Joy/Hobbies     3

Spirituality     3

Goal #1:  Group Exercise Certification by 31 March

To accomplish the goal of earning my Group Exercise Certification from NETA by the end of March I need to:
  • Convince Benny that this is the best route for me. He's not convinced but OK with the expense.
  • Contact NETA to obtain the authorization to take the Group Exercise Instructor exam at a Comira testing center and pay the $239 fee. - called 2/22, received paperwork 2/27.
  • Purchase study materials (pick one)
    • Basic Group Exercise Package $79 (manual & workbook)
    • Premier Group Exercise Package $129 (manual, workbook, practical skills, education department support, & $10 voucher for CECs) - ordered 1/15, received 1/19
  • Contact Comira to schedule the test at a time that's convenient. - scheduled 3/7 for the 29th
  • Pass the exam. - DID IT!
  • Go through CPR certification. - Scheduled 4/4 for the 21st DONE (waiting on card to be mailed)
This goal feels like Neil Armstrong taking that step onto the moon - "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Goal #2:  Wellness Coaching Certification by 30 June

To accomplish the goal of earning my Wellness Coaching Specialty Certification from NETA by the end of June I need to:
  • Accomplish goal #1.
  • Contact NETA to obtain the authorization to take the Wellness Specialty Coaching exam at a Comira testing center and pay the $329 fee.
  • Purchase study materials
    • Keep manual from goal #1.
    • Gavin, J. & McGready, M. Lifestyle Wellness Coaching $69
    • Clifford, D. & Curtis, L.  Motivational Interviewing in Nutrition and Wellness $30 - Recommended not required but on my wishlist for the Nutrition & Fitness portion not covered by the book below.
    • Miller, W. & Rollnick, S.  Motivational Interviewing:  Helping People Change $65 - Ordered from Amazon, saving ~$17
    • Practice Exam $10
  • Contact Comira to schedule the test.
  • Pass the exam.
This goal will make me feel ready to step into coaching for profit instead of doing everything pro bono.

Goal #3:  Attend and Enjoy FitBloggin'

To attend my first blogging conference - FitBloggin' (since it's here in Indy) in July.  Because I bought my pass before the end of the year I saved 50% from being a SweatPink Ambassador!

This goal will make me feel knowledgeable and hopefully also come away with new friendships for regular meet-ups that I have wanted for quite some time.

Goal #4:  Purchase a Laptop by 30 June

Since my laptop is on it's last leg I need to purchase a new one.  To buy one by the end of June I need to:
  • Save ideas to an Amazon wishlist.
  • Set a budget.
  • Research and determine all my must have features.
  • Decide if I want just a laptop, a 2-in-1, or a separate laptop and tablet (leaning more towards this option to use the tablet for personal and laptop for business). - Got the tablet already but no laptop yet.
  • Order it!

Goal #5:  Start Earning Money from Coaching by 31 December

To start earning money by the end of the year I need to:
  • Develop and price fee-based packages.
  • Add this information to the website and various online profiles.
  • Promote my services across social media.
  • Promote the free Brand New Me Facebook community as a part of my services.
  • Set a goal income figure for coaching.

Goal #6: Living My Word of the Year

I've never gone along with choosing a word before so this will be an experiment.

I'm finding that one time I find something makes me happy then the next time I experience it I feel something other than happy. This makes me question whether or not the previous experience truly brought me happiness.

To live my word of the year I'm going to:
  • Make a happiness "jar" to record the good stuff happening in my life. The ones I saw on Pinterest were for a daily record but I think that would be too stressful for me. I'll do weekly sheets and note what happened.
  • Read books focusing on happiness. There's actually a Self-Help category on Amazon for this so it'll be easier to discover the right books for me - Discovering Your Happy.

How was your 2015? What are you looking forward to in 2016?
