Know What You Want & Go After It

In the last couple of chapters, we’ve focused on using CBT to reduce stress. And we’ve seen how this can indirectly lead to advancements in your career thanks to things like the law of attraction.
But what about motivating yourself toward something? What if you’re not frozen by fear and stress but simply by tiredness and indifference? What if you don’t know what it is you want out of life, or how to structure a goal so that you can get there? You can’t very well work toward what you want when you don’t know what that is!
The first thing we’re going to do is to introduce just a very subtle shift in the way you approach these ideas. And specifically, this will mean having a vision and not a goal.

What is the difference between a vision and a goal?

A vision is much more abstract but at the same time, more tangible.
A goal is to lose 15 lbs in 10 weeks. A vision is to be the same you, but fitter, healthier and more attractive – running outdoors with a healthy looking tan and waking up every morning with tons of energy to get up and attack the day.
Which of those things is more motivating? For most people, the answer will be the vision.
The other great thing about visions is that most of us already have them, even if we don’t know it. If I ask you what your goal in life is, then you might not be able to answer. But if I ask you to just imagine your perfect life, then you might find it easier to do. Perhaps you’re sitting on a beautiful beach somewhere? Perhaps you’re living in a massive mansion? Maybe you’re rich in a skyscraper somewhere?
If you’re still struggling to come up with a vision that you can work toward, then some other questions to ask are things like: who are your role models (and what do they have in common)? When was the last time you were truly happy? What did you want to be when you were a kid?
It doesn’t have to be super concrete – wanting to be rich, wanting more time with your family or wishing you weren’t at work is fine! And if you do have something really concrete – wishing you were a famous rock star – then that’s fine too.
From here, the next thing to do is to take that vision and break it down into steps. This is another important point and it’s once again something that a lot of people get wrong. If you are working toward a goal rather than a vision, then you might, as per our previous example, be working toward losing X amount of weight in N amount of time.
This is a fine aim but it’s far too distant and too outside your control to be useful. When it comes to the crunch and you need to force yourself out the door to exercise, it’s all too easy to just tell yourself you’ll catch up on what you’ve missed later. You end up putting it off or making excuses and by the time that amount of time has passed and you haven’t achieved what you were hoping, you just feel disappointed, disheartened and possibly depressed. Eventually, this leads to you giving up entirely!
So instead, we make steps toward our vision. This means coming up with a plan first and often you’ll find it’s easier than you think to accomplish the impossible – it just requires a bit of creative thought. For example, if you want to be a rock star you might take a less obvious route such as creating your own YouTube channel and posting your music regularly. If you build up a big enough following and you have enough obvious skill, then eventually this is highly likely to lead to an offer for a recording contract!
In other scenarios it might be a very easy set of steps – in order to lose weight you might eat no more than 1800 calories every day and workout five times a week for 30 minutes. If you want to write a best selling novel, your goal might be to wake up one hour early and write for 40 minutes before work.
These are now incredibly simple steps that are highly within your control. You either fail or pass but it’s entirely down to you. And if you do fail? You can simply try again the next day. Each day is a fresh challenge and there is no putting things off. Ultimately, this makes a goal much easier to stick to – especially if you use the chain technique a lot of people use: creating a string of X’s in a calendar so that you will find yourself not wanting to break the sequence by missing a workout or writing session!
This will seem detached from the goal at times but if the steps are good, then taking them every single day, week or month on a consistent basis will mean you’re getting gradually closer to your aim.
Now all that’s left is to motivate yourself and to get yourself in a mind set where you’re willing to put in the time and work to get to where you want to be. How do you get yourself to get out of bed to go for a run at 5am when it’s pouring with rain outside?
The answer is that you need to use a slightly altered form of CBT by focusing on the emotional reasons behind what you’re doing. In other words, you need to think about the vision and you need to feel the vision. This is what will give you the release of the correct neurotransmitters to have the motivation to do it. You can also focus on what it is you’re trying to avoid.
So if you’re thinking about running in the morning and you can’t find the willpower to do it, the answer is just to make the connection in your mind so that you link that step to the outcome you want. Visualize that version of yourself who is fit, healthy and ripped and picture yourself running in the sun during the summer. Think about how it feels to never have this low energy and think about the alternative – getting gradually less and less fit and feeling gradually worse and worse with nothing that you can do to fix it.
And if you try this a few mornings and you find it doesn’t work, then another consideration is to try setting yourself up some kind of video or script that you can read or watch when you wake up to do that for you. Feel the emotion, know that the step you’re considering is what can get you there and then take the next step!
Next week we'll talk about increasing your confidence.

Dream It Real 2016

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Looking back at the goals I set for 2015 I feel that the only thing I accomplished was maintaining weight, and that was a struggle with all the health issues that decided to pop up over the year.

This year I've decided to try out Monica at The Yogi Movement's template for setting my 2016 goals.

Here are some highlights of things I accomplished this year:
  1. I maintained my goal weight by continuing as I have been.  I ate a little more, allowed a little more splurges, committed to at least one rest day a week, and switched the focus of my workouts more to strength training than cardio.
  2. I walked my first two 5Ks this year (weather prevented the 3rd).  I now have no problem walking this distance during my lunch break if there's nothing to pick up at the farmer's market.
  3. I had the hysteroscopy with polypectomy (my first surgery) with no issues or need for post-op medications.

What's not working?  What do I need to let go?

Here are a couple of things that are holding me back from living my dream:
  1. Too much time online and not getting ANY customers.  I had no sales whatsoever in Beachbody products this year.
  2. Not enough self-care. My nightly reading isn't enough. I need to get out in public and do more things like those TORC treatments Benny and I did.
  3. Not remembering my accomplishments.  You'd think this would be an easy task. For some reason I just can't recall much.

Where should I focus my goals for 2016?  Ranking the areas from 1-10 (1=worst, 10=best) on whether or not I'm happy where things are currently:

Physical Health     9

Mental Wellbeing     7

Environment     3

Finances     5

Family & Friends     3

Husband     3

Career/Purpose     5

Growth/Continuing Education     5

Pure Joy/Hobbies     3

Spirituality     3

Goal #1:  Group Exercise Certification by 31 March

To accomplish the goal of earning my Group Exercise Certification from NETA by the end of March I need to:
  • Convince Benny that this is the best route for me. He's not convinced but OK with the expense.
  • Contact NETA to obtain the authorization to take the Group Exercise Instructor exam at a Comira testing center and pay the $239 fee. - called 2/22, received paperwork 2/27.
  • Purchase study materials (pick one)
    • Basic Group Exercise Package $79 (manual & workbook)
    • Premier Group Exercise Package $129 (manual, workbook, practical skills, education department support, & $10 voucher for CECs) - ordered 1/15, received 1/19
  • Contact Comira to schedule the test at a time that's convenient. - scheduled 3/7 for the 29th
  • Pass the exam. - DID IT!
  • Go through CPR certification. - Scheduled 4/4 for the 21st DONE (waiting on card to be mailed)
This goal feels like Neil Armstrong taking that step onto the moon - "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Goal #2:  Wellness Coaching Certification by 30 June

To accomplish the goal of earning my Wellness Coaching Specialty Certification from NETA by the end of June I need to:
  • Accomplish goal #1.
  • Contact NETA to obtain the authorization to take the Wellness Specialty Coaching exam at a Comira testing center and pay the $329 fee.
  • Purchase study materials
    • Keep manual from goal #1.
    • Gavin, J. & McGready, M. Lifestyle Wellness Coaching $69
    • Clifford, D. & Curtis, L.  Motivational Interviewing in Nutrition and Wellness $30 - Recommended not required but on my wishlist for the Nutrition & Fitness portion not covered by the book below.
    • Miller, W. & Rollnick, S.  Motivational Interviewing:  Helping People Change $65 - Ordered from Amazon, saving ~$17
    • Practice Exam $10
  • Contact Comira to schedule the test.
  • Pass the exam.
This goal will make me feel ready to step into coaching for profit instead of doing everything pro bono.

Goal #3:  Attend and Enjoy FitBloggin'

To attend my first blogging conference - FitBloggin' (since it's here in Indy) in July.  Because I bought my pass before the end of the year I saved 50% from being a SweatPink Ambassador!

This goal will make me feel knowledgeable and hopefully also come away with new friendships for regular meet-ups that I have wanted for quite some time.

Goal #4:  Purchase a Laptop by 30 June

Since my laptop is on it's last leg I need to purchase a new one.  To buy one by the end of June I need to:
  • Save ideas to an Amazon wishlist.
  • Set a budget.
  • Research and determine all my must have features.
  • Decide if I want just a laptop, a 2-in-1, or a separate laptop and tablet (leaning more towards this option to use the tablet for personal and laptop for business). - Got the tablet already but no laptop yet.
  • Order it!

Goal #5:  Start Earning Money from Coaching by 31 December

To start earning money by the end of the year I need to:
  • Develop and price fee-based packages.
  • Add this information to the website and various online profiles.
  • Promote my services across social media.
  • Promote the free Brand New Me Facebook community as a part of my services.
  • Set a goal income figure for coaching.

Goal #6: Living My Word of the Year

I've never gone along with choosing a word before so this will be an experiment.

I'm finding that one time I find something makes me happy then the next time I experience it I feel something other than happy. This makes me question whether or not the previous experience truly brought me happiness.

To live my word of the year I'm going to:
  • Make a happiness "jar" to record the good stuff happening in my life. The ones I saw on Pinterest were for a daily record but I think that would be too stressful for me. I'll do weekly sheets and note what happened.
  • Read books focusing on happiness. There's actually a Self-Help category on Amazon for this so it'll be easier to discover the right books for me - Discovering Your Happy.

How was your 2015? What are you looking forward to in 2016?

Mastering My Goals and Dreams

I weighed in last night up another pound.  Last week was more because of TOM but I believe this week's gain is because I'm not burning as many calories doing NROLFW as I've done with previous workouts.  So, even though I had another 5 lifting workouts on the schedule I've opted to discontinue NROLFW, at least until I can get heavier dumbbells.

Boy, did we freeze on Halloween!  It kept alternating between rain, freezing rain, and snow.  We walked about 1.5 hours in that mess and my feet were frozen long before we got home.  Austin got a pretty good haul of candy despite the weather.

Posing after Yoga Saturday Morning
Week of Workouts

Friday and Monday were NROLFW Stage 1 Workout A.  Both days I did 75 squats, pushups, & rows, 60 reverse crunches, and 48 lunges

Saturday I did BeFit's Yoga Transformation Strength and Energy workout.

Tuesday I completed David Carradine's Shaolin Cardio Kickboxing workout.  It wasn't as intense as I'm used to with kickboxing but it was still therapeutic!

This morning instead of NROLFW I did Kelly Coffey-Meyer's 30 Minutes to Fitness Lift in Full Throttle Workout One - Olympic Lifting.  OMG I don't know how many squats I did but had to squat with just about every move!  This was definitely more my style than NROLFW.  In the shower I thought for sure my legs would be jello!

Staying on Track for the Holidays

This was the topic at the Weight Watchers meeting last night.  We had to come up with the What (our goal to accomplish by the end of the year), as well as the Where, When, How, and Who can help us achieve this goal.

Last year between November 5th and January 2nd I lost over 9 lbs.  The win I want to have this holiday season is to reach my goal weight (whatever actual number that ends up being) by the end of the year (January 6th weigh in).  If I can lose about the same this year as I did last year I will be in that goal window (130s)!

The places that will be the most important to me this season are the Weight Watchers meetings, this blog, online resources, my own home, and my family's homes we'll be visiting.  Since I won't know when we'll be heading to Ohio until after Thanksgiving I don't know how many days could be considered risky.  As of now we have no plans to attend any other holiday parties.

To help me achieve my holiday win I must make a decision on what program I will be doing.  This may be what I end up going with...

Building an Exceptional Life

I'm glad I held off on posting the second part of the first step of building an exceptional life since it sort of ties in to the Weight Watchers meeting topic - fine-tuning your goals.  A general direction (i.e. helping others to improve their overall health and wellness) isn't the end game.  The vision is there but I need to break it down into smaller goals with clearly defined milestones to measure my progress and keep me on track.  This is where I often struggle.

My Goals & Dreams

I had just written out my goals in September during Mindy Wender's 21 Days to Thrive.  If there were no limitations I would....
  • Travel the world.
  • Pay off all my bills, having just a little debut to maintain good credit.
  • Buy a new blue Ford Fusion.
  • Build my dream home and live there.
  • Be financially fit.
  • Finance Austin's education.
  • Have restorative sleep.
  • Be healthy fit (not buff, skinny, etc.)
  • Host a monthly get-together with friends.
  • Volunteer regularly.
  • Hold monthly fit clubs.
  • Have a social life.
  • Have something special we do as a family every month.
  • Find a church again and attend weekly.
  • Obtain group personal training and wellness coaching certifications.
  • Bring Benny's mother here and have her and my mom nearby so we can keep an eye on them.

The Devil's in the Details

What does success look like? How will things change moment to moment?  What emotions would I be feeling living my dreams?  What do I smell, see, hear, feel, & taste?  These are all the things I must think about with these goals.  I need to also make a new vision board with these detailed goals.  For those who already have vision boards do you prefer a physical or online one?
